Chess Park

LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE
GLENDALE, CA, 2005

A once-empty alley was transformed into a brightly lit and engaging public chess park using simple, durable materials and thoughtful design. The five 28 -foot-high abstracted chess piece sculptures are constructed from recycled wood lumber product topped with white synthetic canvas lanterns. They are strategically sited throughout the park to create a bright, safe, space for play and gathering. What began as a pass-through became a neighborhood meeting ground — proof that clear design can generate lasting community.
